It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead this district into a new era. I have spent the majority of the summer meeting with many of the district stakeholders including board members, administrators, teachers, secretaries, and maintenance staff. It was abundantly clear throughout this process that there is a tremendous amount of pride that permeates throughout the district. I look forward to working with a board of education and staff that wants to do what is best for every student by providing the highest quality education. We are committed to recruiting and retaining the best educators who understand that all learners have limitless potential.

Unlocking every child’s potential is one facet of a great education. Establishing positive values is another component of developing the whole child. Therefore, our faculty and staff will continue to model the professional behaviors necessary to ensure our students’ development into productive citizens.

The Brownsville Area School District (BASD) is based in a rural community of low socio-economic status (67.3%) where the main industries include agriculture and manufacturing. It is located on the western side of Fayette County, along the Monongahela River. We are a unique district in terms of our location due to a small portion of the school district is located in West Brownsville, across the river in Washington County. It serves students from many communities which include the following: the Borough of Brownsville, Brownsville Township, Luzerne Township, and Redstone Township. Many families in these communities live in the dense residential areas while others live in the rural areas. The district encompasses 57 square miles.

The district serves approximately 1,600 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, made up of predominantly Caucasian students (79.6%) with approximately 12.6% African-American students, 6.2% multi-racial, and less than 1% each of Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and Asian categories. The student body contains 24.5% special education. The district currently has three school buildings: one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. They are all housed on the same campus. Brownsville Area Elementary School houses kindergarten through fifth grade. Brownsville Area Middle School serves sixth through eighth grade. It is attached to the Brownsville Area High School. The high school serves ninth through twelfth grade. The central office is housed within the middle school/high school complex. The district is supported with 6 central office administrators, 3 building administrators, 125 professional employees, and 82 support personnel. Class size ratio is 17:1.

BASD partners with other educational entities to provide the additional educational opportunities. Students in the tenth grade through twelfth are able to attend the Fayette County Area Vocational Technical School to receive vocational and technical education. Students at the high school level are able to participate in many advanced placement courses during the school day as well as participation in a dual enrollment programs at the local colleges and universities which include but not limited to the following: California University of PA, Penn State Fayette Eberly Campus, Westmoreland Community College, Seton Hill University, and Community College of Allegheny County. The Intermediate Unit 1 provides special education services to all qualifying students in the district's K-12 program. Students who needs cannot be accommodated by the district and require specialized attention receive contracted services outside of the district's boundaries.

There are several community organizations that work within the school district including but not limited to the following: Communities in Schools, Brownsville Rotary, Republic Rotary, BARC, Fayette County Juvenile Probation, Fayette MH/MR, Chestnut Ridge Counseling, etc. Students who graduate from BASD venture into all areas such as post-secondary education, armed forces, and full-time employment.
